Research: Line managers and preventing employee stress

Funded by the HSE, CIPD, IIP and the Affinity Health at Work Research Consortium, this research set out to explore the link between line manager behaviour and the prevention and reduction of stress in those being managed. Over the first three phases, the research developed a behavioural framework showing the management competencies identified as being important in this context, together with a questionnaire to measure whether a particular manager shows the relevant behaviours, and interventions to support managers in developing/showing the competencies. The fourth and final phase developed a series of case studies looking at how a selection of employer organisations implemented the 'management competencies' research in practice.

The outputs so far from the research are available as follows:

Following the preventing stress research, we carried out research looking at the line manager behaviours relevant to engendering employee engagement. We then brought the preventing stress and engendering engagement work together to create a framework of the manager behaviours required for engendering sustainable employee engagement.
